The Practice Assessor

The NMC requires the assessor to be a registered health professional with prescribing experience, independent of the student’s day-to-day supervision.
NMC & HCPC Requirements to Be a Practice Assessor for Prescribing Programs (V300).

Professional Registration

Must be a registered nurse, midwife, or allied health professional with an active registration (e.g., NMC PIN or GMC number).

Prescribing Qualification
 Must hold a current prescribing qualification, such as V300 Independent Prescribing.
 Should be an active prescriber, meaning they regularly consult with patients and make prescribing decisions based on clinical assessment.

Prescribing Experience
 Typically expected to have at least 3 years of recent prescribing experience in the relevant field of practice.
 Must demonstrate clinical competence and prescribing confidence in the speciality area (e.g., aesthetics, primary care, etc.).

 Independence from Supervision
 The Practice Assessor must be independent of the student’s Designated Prescribing Practitioner (DPP) and not involved in their daily supervision.
 This ensures objective assessment of the student’s prescribing competence.

Additional Expectations

Familiarity with the NMC Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment (SSSA).

Ability to triangulate feedback from clinical supervision, prescribing episodes, and reflective practice.

Commitment to evidence-based assessment, clinical governance, and patient safety.
